Twenty minutes long, but worth one watch

Solipsism (Listeni/ˈsɒlɨpsɪzəm/; from Latin solus, meaning "alone", and ipse, meaning "self") is the philosophical idea that only one's own mind is sure to exist.

Very cool indeed... Smiley

It's always nice to see a simple visualization of non-trivial results.

Very cool.  I think it was worth more than one watch, and found myself rewinding.

That's great. Watched it during lunch. I really liked the the analogies, like the twisting of a belt and whatnot. Easy to understand.

the only reason it would be easier to program in C is that you can't easily express complex problems in C, so you don't. -comp.lang.lisp

Wow, I watched it twice. That was really great.

Copyright at the end says "1994", the thing is 14 years old.

I agree it was pretty awesome, but i got the same feeling i got when i read malcolm gladwell: that it's very convincing, but could well be telling me that up is down for all i can tell. And the Deanna Troi voice put me on edge a bit too.

A friend pointed out the video "Not Knot" as being done by the same people (or at least people involved with Bill Thurston):

Hey guys...a question from a non math guy on the topic..at the beginning he suggests to poke a hole in it..than she says:naw, thats too easy..but then allows the material to intersect ...is there a difference between intersect and poking a hole in the surface?
Thanx

"is there a difference between intersect and poking a hole in the surface?"

Nonius (and others) are the topologists here.

if you poke a hole in something, there is empty space there.

If two lines intersect, at that singularity, both lines have the same coordinate and both lines pass through that coordinate.

Same with planes

Same with....N dimensions.

math guys, I'm making a hash of this. Correct and enlighten us.

yes, there is a difference. Mapping the points to points on the other side is fine. Putting a hole in the surface would change the genus. We can't have a sphere be the same as a torus.
