Does anybody know of any quants who have left Wall Street to flex their quantitative muscles elsewhere? Where do they go? Are there any industries regularly picking up Wall Street quants? Would love to hear your thoughts.
Many thanks!

I know D.E Shaw left Wall Street to do Computational Biology and Chemistry related research.

I know a guy who was a programmer for JP Morgan, left and started building iPhone applications and related stuff.

I know more than a few. To be truthful, I am not 100% sure why new people are coming to finance now. I mean, I get it, but I don't get it. It isn't like it's 1985 or 1995. If you have half a brain go work on the next thing. The cookie cutters have been dye and cast for the foreseeable future.

Chiral, I utterly understand what you're saying. So what fields did some of these people you know move into, once they left finance? Can you list a few sectors/companies?
Thanks!

Sure. What deadline did your editor hand you? And how many words are you shooting for? Also just so we can be helpful, you might as well tell us what angle your piece will have.

I've been seeing a fair number of old acquaintances from nuclear engineering head back to academics via the medical physics route.

Recently found out a guy I worked with @ Lockheed some years ago, went fluid-flow -> qfinance -> organic farmer/recluse extraordinaire. Because seriously, who wants to go back to FEA of control surfaces day in-day out? ;)

I'd entertain going back into mech eng/design after a certain comfort $ level is reached doing what I do as a trader. Getting back onto that horse after a large relevant employment gap, is another story.

Studying structural properties of control surfaces at a defense contractor sounds really boring. But FEA of bras at an underwear company could be cool. Especially so the experimental part ;-) Here's a demo. More info here.

It's all about "arbitrage." By using the same skills, if you get paid more in finance, then you should be doing finance.

It would be nice if there were more people who actually liked the finance part of the business.

You can get interested in anything if you think about it enough.

Hmm..., a passing interest?. Ok. Genuine interest? Maybe. A passion for the subject? Forget about it. Then again stranger things have happened.

I certainly found finance a lot more interesting than I expected to before I started learning it.

My original motivation was that I would go to pure maths job interviews and they would ask me if I could teach financial maths.

I'll second that sentiment.  I wish I'd started earlier.

A guy called Jeff Bezos left wall street to found an information superhighway company.  don't know if it took off though.
