Futures month codes are (CME link):

Month Codes
Month Abbr
January F
February G
March H
April J
May K
June M
July N
August Q
September U
October V
November X
December Z

What's the logic? Why does it start in F, misses some letters?
My guess is some (L,O,I) look like numbers while some others (P,R,S,T) make it look more like an already existent symbol.
Does anybody know for certain? Cheers, Cord

There was a point in time where the prompt (front) relative contract could be referenced with the letter 'A', the next one 'B', and so on.

But that applies to computed contracts, right? For example Bloomberg has CL1, CL2, etc... for the the frontmost, second, etc....
At the same time they have CLA, CLB,... for the "most active", "second most active", etc... I am not sure what's their definition of active.
But I'm intrigued about the logic in "absolute"/calendar names.

Bloomberg defines the "active" contract to be what the exchange tells them it is.

ya know that a floor guy will throw a card at the pit monkey with a 'V' written upside down so that it looks like an uncrossed 'A'

From the horses' mouth: I sent a message to the CME and got this response. What do you guys think?

Thank you for contacting CME Group.

While e have no historical documentation, we logically believe this: Futures trading started with agricultural commodities like Corn, Soybeans, Wheat, Oats, etc. many years ago. When it came time to select month codes for the contract months, it seems like they were selected in alphabetical order skipping those letters already claimed for other things like commodity contracts or Bid and Ask, etc. Unfortunately, as you will see below, I am not sure now what some of the letters otherwise skipped may have represented. Thanks,

A = Ask
B = Bid
C = Corn
D = ?
E = Eggs
F = January
G = February
H = March
I = ?
J = April
K = May
L = ?
M = June
N = July
O = Oats
P = ?
Q = August
R = ?
S = Soybeans
T = ?
U = September
V = October
W = Wheat
X = November
Y = ?
Z = December

PS: too bad, I had already set up my telegraph in the living room, and started practicing ;-)

Thank you for posting this. I always felt clueless when talking to traders who acted like the codes CME uses made perfect sense. At least I know the logic they attempted to use when they set this up.

no problem. They didn't gave any proof of it, but it kinda make sense. I mentioned them the 1/i/l and o/0 confussion and the Morse thing - and they said they never considered it but that it was highly probable.

(maybe they were saving the "R" for Real Estate ;-)
